sideways
i saw sideways today, and although i liked the movie (very good ensemble acting), i really don't get the fuss. i don't like seeing movies that get this much hype. regardless how i feel about them, i always end up a bit disappointed. oh, the albatross of expectations. wish this was one i stumbled onto late some night on cable...

...you nailed it with the comment on ensemble acting...actually ensemble everything- writing, directing, production - I too felt it was a very good movie, but not quite worthy of the hype...Giamatti has brought character acting to some kind of new level - American Splendor was another fabulous "small' movie.
Damn, Mike, I spent so much time trying to gain access to your comments I forgot what I planned to comment on.
Oh yeah, Sideways...
I think the movie got so much praise because of the dearth of creative competition out there.
With this Bushian era of Puritanical censorship, I think major studios are sticking to light romantic comedies and violent action movies-seemingly playing it safe by pandering directly to Laura Bush and her dimwitted husband.
We can't expect creativity to flourish in an atmosphere of narrow-minded, judgmental 'leadership.'
lol...
the manner in which every phenomenom represents the failure of the administration - which i don't necessarily agree with, although, i don't necessarily DISagree with, remnds me of the old nuns i used to have - where every subject related to religion - i.e. in math class - isn't it wonderful that g*d made a world where 1+1=2
p.s. i loved american splendor. thought it was better than sideways. giamatti is great in both.
