diana krall

i have never been much of a diana krall fan. i always thought she got a lot of hype because she was a very attractive young woman who could carry a tune. not that she was a bad singer, but merely average, and not worthy of the attention she got. listening to some of her older work kinda confirmed that opinion. nice, but nothing exceptional.

well, perhaps because she married elvis costello, i felt obligated to check her out again. i am quite suprised, her new single, temptation (a tom waits tune) is quite good. she seems to have strayed from her tried and true format of standards to a more personal approach - doing less cliched songs such as temptation, costello's almost blue, black crow (a song from my favorite joni mitchell album, hejira), along with some tunes she co-wrote with costello. the new album, judging from the samples of each track i heard, sounds like her most personal record and her best. i'm looking forward to hearing it in its entirety.
